A Good Night's Rest - The Importance of Bedtime Routines for Babies

When it comes to babies, usually everyone around you suddenly considers themselves an expert and knows exactly what you should be doing in any given situation. Often, the advice given by one person is in conflict with the advice given by someone else. This can be confusing, especially for new parents.

Perhaps one of the most discussed issues is sleep. Many new parents will expect to get precious little of it for a while, yet secretly hope that the newborn will be one of those amazing babies who will sleep through the night straight away. This is natural. Nobody yearns to be woken up several times a night.

Most newborn babies, though, have a bit of an erratic sleeping pattern, especially for the first six to twelve weeks. After this time, you can help settle your baby into a more regular sleeping pattern, if you are consistent.

Each mother has a different approach to this, a different tactic they think you should use. Only you, as the parent, will know what is best for your baby and your family. My advice is to use the knowledge you have of your baby to decide on the best way to settle them into sleep. Nobody knows your baby better than you.

Babies need a lot of sleep. For a newborn, sixteen to eighteen hours a day is average and all babies need plenty of shut-eye. They just don't always sleep when you want them to. However, it will get easier when you establish a routine and keep to a consistent bedtime as much as possible.

Bedtime rituals are important. If you follow the same routine each evening, the baby will learn to associate this pattern with the time to go to sleep. A bath, a bedtime story, a cuddle and so on, a calm and soothing time together will help the baby relax and learn that bedtime is not something to get worked up about.

If your baby spends a lot of time crying during the night, most experts recommend against letting your little one "cry it out". Though you certainly needn't rush in at the first little whimper, if your baby is still crying after a few minutes, it is good to go and check what is the problem. It is advisable not to pick up your baby straight away, otherwise he might think crying = being picked up. Keep everything low-key, try and soothe him with your hand and voice, talk softly for a while and see if he'll go back to sleep.

In the morning, when you wake your baby, fuss over him a bit more, let him associate the morning and the daylight with the time for attention and happiness, a time to be awake and be with you.

Once your baby learns that sleep is something pleasant, and nothing to be worried about, odds are that all your lives will start becoming that bit simpler, and that you will all get a good night's rest.

Again, the best person to judge which tactics to use to help establish this rhythm, is you. There are many pieces of advice out on the Internet, and experiences shared by other new parents. It can take about ten weeks for a baby to get used to a bedtime routine, so please don't give up too easily. If it really does not work, do not be afraid to try something different, but again, do be consistent with your new routine to allow your baby to learn.
